INTERNATIONAL OPEN CALL FOR MAIL ART SOLIDARITY FOR PEACE El Salvador´s 25th Anniversary Peace Accords Commemorative Exhibition SALA NACIONAL DE EXPOSICIONES SALARRUÉ January 12-27, 2017
Art is a powerful venue to promote social transformation in such critically important issues as peacebuilding and post-conflict reconciliation. As such, and in the context of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the signing of El Salvador´s Peace Accords, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the Presidential Secretariat for Culture and the United Nations system, invites visual artists globally to take part in the open call for entries for the mail art exhibition “Solidarity for Peace”.
“Solidarity for Peace” will exhibit the artworks generated by this open call for the first time in El Salvador, in order to highlight the importance of artists and their mail artworks in contributing to democratic dialogue and expressing their solidarity with the Salvadoran peace process.
The mail artworks received via post office will be exhibited by the Salarrué National Exhibitions Hall in San Salvador, within the framework of commemorative events to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Salvadoran Peace Accords, and will become part of the collection of the future Museum of Memory and Peace.
The insignia piece for this call was specially created by artist Licry Bicard using a fresh language evocative of Pre-Hispanic symbols, and in which a round figure like sun, wheel, or eye, seems to float in a sky of uncertainty illuminating the way. Licry Bicard (San Salvador, 1944), named “Hija merítisima de El Salvador” by the Legislative Assembly in 2004, is an artist of great impetus who investigates freely between abstraction and figuration exhibiting internationally throughout her career.
The exhibition will be accompanied by parallel activities that seek to celebrate and consolidate the Salvadoran Peace Accords through the visual arts.
